This day 125 years ago:
Today in history British invading force led by Consul Phillips annihilated by Benin Strike Force.
On January 4 1897, His Majesty Oba Ovonramwen the 36th Oba of Benin was 'at play with his people' when Consul James Robert Phillips against all advice {including the British government] advanced on Benin City during the annual Igue Festival.
Consul Phillips had been repeatedly told to wait a couple more days until he heard from the Oba and was given clearance to come before the Oba and his chiefs. Pride however got the better of him. The result was what came to be known as the Benin Massacres. Benin Border Guards considering it an unprovoked attack and invasion against their country wiped him and his over 250 troop out excluding 2 Whitemen who lived to tell the tale.
