#ONTHISDAY January 14 1914. The last independent king of the Great kingdom of Benin Oba Nogbaisi Ovonramwen The Great dies in Calabar where he has been in exile for the past 17 years. He was exiled for life by the British on September 15 1897 so that they could colonise his kingdom.
It was at this time, January 1914 that the British colonial powers were finally able to amalgamate the Southern Niger Protectorate and the Northern Niger Protectorate into the current country of Nigeria.
