Robert Mugabe has resigned as president of Zimbabwe after 37 years of ruling.

Mr. Mugabe's sacking comes after he turned a deaf ear on mounting pressure for him to step down as president of the country. He has been under house arrest since Wednesday 15 November. Yesterday a wide scale demonstration for him to resign was held in Harare by members of various groups including the Independence War Veterans and members of his own party but he has stubbornly held on. His wife Grace Mugabe has also been expelled from the party. However, Mr Mugabe remains president of his country despite expulsion from his political party. As an elected president he is legally still the president of Zimbabwe.
